The bridge is subject to planning
Athy Train Station is to get a bridge subject to planning permission.
Sinn Feín Rep – Thomas Redmond commented: "In 2014 we founded the train users Action Committee ,as local people were witness to the difficulties of using the station.
"I was witness to difficult scenes of people having to lug prams over the bridge and there was a crazy issue that people had to manage crossing the road if they wanted the train or go to another platform if they were in a wheelchair.
"Also Athy was the only station left with no bridge and I was very vocal in getting this message out there. We have hundreds of people using our trains daily.
"The service in the main is very good but there are significant difficulties in the Athy station.
"There are 3 key areas that need to be looked at one was the bridge and crossing to the other platform, the second was the toilet and why it was constantly locked, particularly as its so close to the peoples park and the third that was a bug bearer is the way the pedestrians the road.
"This is a significant issue as to exit the station you are faced with a road with no crossing point. I have no idea why the council have not rectified this but this needs a priority.
"A bridge was our main item of calling and this is a great start. This is going to be a game changer," he added.
