Local community groups have called for the facility.

There have been calls for Kildare County Council to support the addition of a basketball court to the town park in Prosperous.

Local community groups have called for the facility, taking into the account the young people living in the area.

KCC says it will be considered for future works, while remarking that a full court wouldn't be possible due to the green space it would remove, it said that a "3x3" court alternative would be "appropriate".

The council also stressed "there is no objection in principle to providing a basketball court in Prosperous Town Park".

Speaking on Kildare Today, Social Democrats Councillor for Clane-Maynooth MD Paula Mulroe said the facility would be beneficial for the young population:

"We've a fairly young population, with new arrivals as well. Our kids growing up into teenagers, there's not much for them to do apart from joining clubs, and not every family can afford to have memberships in different organisations.

Cllr Mulroe welcomed the "positive response" from the council, as she will seek to have the plans added to works for 2027.

"It's a free open facility for kids during the summer or whenever the weather is ok, so they can congregate and have a bit of fun, which is badly needed.
