The Higher Education Minister is raising concerns over the impact of single-sex schools on personal behaviour.
Patrick O'Donovan is worried these schools may lead to increasing "aggression" and gender-based violence in society.
He's stressing the importance of integration at a young age, and says he would like to see an end to all-boys and all-girls classrooms.
Cllr Evie Sammon told Kfm that she loved going to an all-girl's school but if the research backs up co-educational schools then it should be considered.
She said the issue of providing co-educational schools at the Mercy Convent Primary School and St Corban’s Boys National School in Naas is something that has been going on for years.
She said Naas, Maynooth, Celbridge and Newbridge have single-sex schools.
Barbara Ennis, however, Principle of Alexandra College in Dublin, doesn't agree with the call.
