New apartments in Athy are set to commence this month.

The 33 units are planned for Convent Lane in the town.

Kildare County Council have said that Clúid, the Approved Housing Body (AHB) responsible for this project has
advised they "expect contractors to commence this project on site in June 2026".

Speaking on Kildare Today, Labour Councillor for Athy MD Aoife Breslin said that the units have been in planning for some time:

"These have been on the planning for some time, there had some delay, I expected them to start much earlier in the year."

The apartments, which are "for mostly elderly people" will also have a communal area.

Cllr Breslin added that the units are "badly needed in the town of Athy" and that it will "take some people off of the housing list".
