There has been demands for Kildare County Council to engage with the EPA amid ongoing odours emitting from Scanpole facility at Oldmilltown in Kill.
The site is used for treating of poles with creocote for ESB, as part of their grid expansion.
The odours emitted from the site have been described as a "serious health hazard".
Speaking on Kildare Today, Fine Gael Councillor for Naas MD Fintan Brett said that the odours were not deemed to exceed any environmental thresholds:
"The odour is permeating down through Kill, while the EPA say the odour is not above the limit where they could consider it a health hazard."
KCC said that they have engaged with the EPA regarding the situation, who have issued an Interim Monitoring Report identifying the site as the main source of the creosote odours.
The HSE Public Health referred the EPA’s interim report for independent review by the Centre for Radiation, Chemicals and Environmental Hazards (CRCE), UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA).
This review concluded that the available monitoring data indicates that the odours do not exceed applicable environmental or public health thresholds and they pose no significant risk to health from ambient exposure.
Cllr Brett raised concerns about immunocompromised people who live near to the site.
He also says that the ESB should step in and be the "good neighbour":
"They should cover the poles for the first few weeks, when the odour is strongest, I live in Johnstown, 5km from there, and I can get the odour when they're dipping the poles, so I'm sure it's a lot worse in Kill."
"There has been a concerted effort from residents to get this dealt with, creocote has been barred in 2030 because of the carcinogenic elements that are in the treatment, and I don't think people and families that pay big money for their houses should be exposed to that."
He added that it has taken 18 months for the situation to be sorted, with KCC awaiting a response following engagement with ESB.
Kildare County Council's Environment Department has scheduled a meeting with ESB Networks (ESBN) to discuss possible mitigation measures, implementation timelines, and ongoing monitoring arrangements.
