Cllrs Peggy O'Dwyer, William Durkan and Brendan Wyse brought the question to a Kildare County Council Meeting
Kildare County Council have told councillors that it has no way of disposing of nitrous oxide canisters.
The canisters, better known as "laughing gas", have a number of industrial uses and is used medically.
However, it can also be used by users to experience a quick, euphoric effect.
Raised by councillors Peggy O'Dwyer, William Durkan and Brendan Wyse, the safe disposal of the canisters has become an issue for recycling and waste management companies.
They have asked for the council to write to the Department of Climate, Energy and the Environment for a policy on the disposal of said canisters.
According to Kildare County Council official, Marian Higgins, the council has no facilities to dispose of the canisters, and that they are not accepted by locally based waste collection operators due to health and safety reasons.
It was also added that due to the physical appearance of the canisters, which are opaque, it is difficult to discern if it is empty or full.
Ms Higgins concluded that the issue of disposing of nitrous oxide canisters is not unique to Kildare, and instead highlights a national issue that needs to be addressed.
