Figures Reveal Kildare Town Primary School As Largest In The Country For Second Successive Year

It comes as 51,851 children and young people in Kildare return to school this September

St Brigid’s Primary School in Kildare town was the country’s largest primary school for the second year in a row in 2025/26 with enrolments amounting to 1,014 across 41 classes.

This represented an average class size of 24.7.

It comes as 51,851 children and young people in Kildare return to school this September as schools across the country got back to normality.

Figures from the Department of Education show that 29,060 children returned to primary schools, including special schools.

While, 22,791 young people returned to post-primary school.

3,364 children in Kildare are going into junior infants, while 3,923 are going into first year in post-primary school.

Nationwide, 965,000 children and young people return to school, 536,000 of these are children in primary and special schools, and 429,000 are young people in post-primary schools.

75,000 teachers are also returning to school, 39,300 are teachers in primary schools, 34,600 are teachers in post-primary schools, and 1,870 are teachers in special schools.
