He was working in the family-run Kildrought Lounge when the attack happened.
A Celbridge publican who was blinded in one eye in an attack outside his premises has said the consequences will remain with him for the rest of his life.
Conoir Feehan from the Irish Independent writes that Gerard O’Connor was working in the family-run Kildrought Lounge in Celbridge, , on June 28, last, when the attack happened.
Naas Circuit Court heard the assault left him without sight in his right eye.
Garda Michael Freyne, of Celbridge garda station, told Judge Elva Duffy that Mr O’Connor had been in another part of the pub when his brother asked him to come to the lounge, where there was trouble involving a customer, Patrick O’Brien.
The court heard that Mr O’Connor was punched to the ground and, while down, was kicked in the head.
The court heard that O’Brien (30), of no fixed abode, has 119 previous convictions, mostly for public order offences, but also including three assaults, three incidents of criminal damage and 13 thefts.
He pleaded guilty to assault causing serious harm and criminal damage.
The judge sentenced O’Brien to seven-and-a-half years in prison, with the final nine months suspended.
