There's concern the Irish Air Corps may have to stop it's flight operations at night because of a lack of air traffic controllers.
They're based at Casement Aerodrome in Baldonnel in Dublin and manage the airspace around it, which can include night-time flights by the Defence Forces and Garda helicopter.
However the Journal reports air traffic controllers are being lost to high paid civilian jobs, where they can take up roles that have a starting wage of €80,000.
Cathal Berry, a former TD for Kildare South and army officer, said that the issue was flagged years ago but the Government failed to act to retain the specialists.
He said it is an example of "a single point of failure" that could cause the entire operation to end.
A senior source in the Irish Air Corps told The Journal that there has been extensive recruitment efforts to bring in experienced personnel from the Irish military to Weston Airport near Leixlip.
They said they do not take entry "from the civilian world to fill gaps as they arise" having to instead rely on skilled people from within the military.
