Two Alzheimers memory walks were held across the county yesterday (20 September) in Castletown and Moore Abbey Woods, Kildangan
It comes as today (21 September) is World Alzheimers Day, with over 40 walks that took place over the weekend.
The Alzheimers Society of Ireland says there are currently 64,000 people living with Dementia in the country, with that figure expected to double by 2045.
Speaking on Kildare Today, Dementia Advisor for Kildare, Annmarie Kett said it was a "fantastic day" for the walk at Moore Abbey Woods:
"We had a fantastic day, thankfully the weather was on our side, we had approximately 100 people attend, a lot of people turning out to support their loved ones, it was clear to see they were supported throughout the event.
"We do really try to get Dementia-specific support right across the country."
Annmarie spoke about the importance of assisting the family of someone who lives with Dementia, aiming to support people in the best way they can:
"When we meet families for the first time, we assure them that we're there for the loved ones, but we're also there for them as well. On initial contact, we'll listen to your specific set of circumstances, and we'll do our very best to signpost you in the right direction whereby you can get the support that both you and your family member needs."
The services are "hugely in demand" and on approach to Budget 2027, Alzheimers Society of Ireland have placed an emphasis on more home care and daycare centres, while advocating for more services for people in general as well, describing their offerings as "invaluable" to families whose loved one has Dementia.
When it comes to receiving a diagnosis, Annmarie encourages people to reach out to their helpline on 1800 341 341 or alternatively to link with their Dementia advisors to establish the best steps to take.
