The crash happened shortly after 6 am this morning on the R401 at Drumcooly, near Edenderry. It involved a crane and two vans.
The driver of one van, a man in his 40s, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the second van, a man in his 30s, was taken to Midland Regional Hospital in Tullamore with non-life-threatening injuries.
The road remains closed for a forensic examination, and local diversions are in place.
The Health and Safety Authority has also been notified and will carry out its own investigation.
Gardaí are urging anyone who witnessed the collision, or who may have dash-cam footage from the area between 6 and half past 6 this morning, to come forward.
