Fianna Fail and Fine Gael have responded to alleged claims of interference with election posters.

It follows claims by some members of the public that posters of Independent candidate Catherine Connolly were allegedly replaced with posters of Fine Gael and Fianna Fail candidates Heather Humphreys and Jim Gavin in Kilcock and Celbridge.

In statements provided by both Fianna Fail and Fine Gael to Kfm, both parties refuted the claims.

Responding, a spokesperson for Fianna Fail said:

"The policy for postering is to poster on free poles only. We would not ever direct any volunteer or anyone who had posters belonging to us to remove another candidates posters. Our posters for Jim were installed in Celbridge on Saturday and the contractor confirmed that he did not, nor would they, remove any posters belonging to any other candidate."

They added: "We would [not] condone that behaviour outright. If you have any proof of this, please do share it with us and we will take appropriate action. Jim is committed to a respectful campaign."

A spokesperson for Fine Gael said:

"Fine Gael has checked with our Kildare campaign teams and are satisfied that none were involved in the alleged incidents. It has nothing to do with our Presidential campaign."
