Fiosrú Say Gardaí Acted Appropriately Prior To Fatal M9 Crash In Moone

Fiosrú began its independent investigation on the 16th of August

The Garda ombudsman has determined Gardaí acted in accordance with the law prior to last month's fatal M9 crash.

A Fiosrú report says Gardaí following the car prior to the head on collision in which five teenagers were killed, acted appropriately and followed the relevant policies and procedures.

Fiosrú began its independent investigation on the 16th of August following the crash on the M9 in Moone, which left five teenagers dead and three sisters and a young boy with serious injuries.

Investigators obtained and reviewed CCTV and radio transmissions and established Gardaí terminated their pursuit after the BMW the teenagers were travelling in entered the M9 dual carriageway, with the Garda Control Room confirming the pursuit should not continue.

The report found other units attempted to place a stopping device at an appropriate location, however the BMW carried out several U-turns, before fatally colliding with the oncoming car.

The mandatory Garda referral is the sixth referral that related to Garda interactions with vehicles being driven the wrong way on motorways and national roads since 2021.

Earlier this week, the three women injured in the crash said they are getting stronger each day.
