Celebrations taking place in Kildare town
On Saturday, an Garda Síochána celebrations will take place in Kildare town.
A family friendly day of events takes place in the town from 11.45am.
The day has been organised & funded by Kildare County Council's Decade of Commemorations Committee, An Garda Síochána, An Garda Síochána Retired Members Association, and the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media.
From 10am - 5pm
The Garda Museum will be opened at the Old Courthouse, with Garda artifacts through the years curated by Tom O’Neill.
From 11.45
A Garda parade will take place, beginning at Fairview and arriving at Market Square. This will include the Garda band.
At 12.00pm
The Cathaoirleach of Kildare County Council, Cllr. Naoise Ó Cearúil will deliver the official opening address.
Deputy-Commissioner Anne Marie McMahon, Vice-President Garda Síochána Retired Members Association, Marie Roche & Garda Superintendent Martin Walker will also speak.
12.20pm
A re-enactment will be performed by Lord Edward’s Own Re-enactment Group, of the handover of the old R.I.C. Barracks at Cunningham’s Public House.
This will be followed by a march to the site of the former Magee Barracks (Aldi).
Then travelling to the Garda Barracks in the town, for the planting of a commemorative tree.
From 1pm - 6pm
The open Day at Kildare Garda Station will take place, with vintage cars, face painting, etc.
At 1pm, 2pm & 3.30pm
Guided walking tours will be given, by former Garda P. J. Hester.
They will begin at Kildare Town Heritage Centre.
Between 1.30pm & 3.30pm
Lord Edward’s Own Re-enactment Group will perform demonstrations, and information on period weapons & uniforms, at the old Courthouse Courtyard.
