Gardaí have identified six organised burglary gangs based in Kildare and Dublin that are travelling nationwide to target homes and businesses.
Detective Chief Superintendent Séamus Boland of the Garda National Drugs and Organised Crime Bureau ((GNDOCB) said the groups are distinct from the 22 major drugs and firearms gangs also under investigation.
He told the Irish Independent that alarms, dogs and CCTV do not deter these gangs, unlike opportunistic burglars.
According to the publication, a 41-year-old "career criminal" from Naas has recently carried out an extensive burglary spree across counties including Donegal, Sligo, Leitrim and Cavan.
Meanwhile, Garda crime data for the first six months of the year shows an overall decrease across a range of offences: interfering with a vehicle is down 27%, aggravated burglary is down 25%, and riot and violent disorder have fallen by 36%.
The figures are provisional and subject to change.
Arson is up 20 percent, while cases of rape and sexual assault are up 4 percent.
There's also been a marked increase in fraud offences overall - up 73 percent between January and June, compared to the same period last year.
