People have been scammed out of hundreds, and often thousands, of euro.
Gardai are issuing a warning about romance fraud.
Scammers prey on people's trust, usually in dating apps or other online forums, and manipulate them in to believing there is true feeling between them.
They may often, initially, ask for small sums of money, but this can quickly spiral.
Victims are usually reluctant to go to Gardai, because of embarrassment.
Detective Inspector Mel Smyth, of the Garda National Economic Crime Bureau, joined Clem Ryan on Wednesday's edition of Kildare Today.
He relayed the experience of "Carol", who did seek the help of Gardai when she was targeted by a romance fraudster.
