The Tánaiste Simon Harris announced Major General Colm Ó Luasa has been appointed to the role
Major General Colm Ó Luasa will take over as Deputy Chief of Staff of the Defence Forces.
He's due to succeed Major General Adrian Ó Murchú, who retired in February.
Major General Ó Luasa who is from Cork, has 39 years of experience, including deployments to Lebanon, Liberia, Syria, Kosovo and Somalia.
The Tánaiste says the Government is looking forward to working closely with senior members of the Defence Forces to tackle the challenges of the future.
