Despite initial plans to establish a centre in Maynooth, difficulties in securing a suitable site have led to the decision to consolidate services in Leixlip.
Plans for a new primary care centre in Leixlip are expected to go to tender in a matter of months.
The Government has confirmed that it will serve both the Leixlip and Maynooth populations.
Despite initial plans to establish a centre in Maynooth, difficulties in securing a suitable site have led to the decision to consolidate services in Leixlip.
The HSE has been seeking a suitable site since 2015 "with no success" according to Minister for Health, Jennifer Carroll MacNeill.
She said a proposal to develop a centre on the site of the existing Maynooth health centre was denied planning permission.
The HSE wanted to upgrade an existing health centre in Maynooth into a primary care centre, but planning permission was denied - a move described as "ludicrous" by Kildare North Fianna Fail TD Naoise O Cearuil.
"There was a site where a health centre was to be changed into a health centre, which is ludicrous. There is a wider argument around planning, particularly how one arm of the State speaks to another," he said.
Maynooth’s health centre will continue operating as a satellite unit, complementing the new Leixlip facility, according to the HSE.
The larger Leixlip centre will provide expanded multidisciplinary services, including specialist community care teams.
The HSE is finalising the project’s accommodation schedule, with a tender process expected in the second quarter of 2025.
