HSE Team Set Up To Address Potential €41M Naas Hospital Overspend

A number of recommendations were made for the hospital to reduce spending

A cost recovery team has been set up to address an overspend at Naas General Hospital.

There's fears it could exceed it's budget by €41million.

It comes as the HSE are also experiencing financial overruns, with their deficit reaching €580 million by the end of July.

Speaking on Kildare Today, Social Democrats TD for Kildare North Aidan Farrelly believes the issue of overspends is going to affect Kildare people:

"We've a Minister for Public Expenditure telling us we need to spend less, yet we also have a Minister for Finance giving tax-breaks to private companies, Kildare is specifically harmed by decisions like this, because our population for over 75s is set to double by 2032.

"We are going to have a bigger need for a public hospital like Naas over the next few years."

Deputy Farrelly adds that basic services shouldn't be cut due to the overspend:

"What we cannot have is very basic services being cut, because that will mean increased trolley numbers, and worsening health for people who experience that, that can't be accepted."

He also referenced agency spend as a contributory factor, with the Irish Times reporting that Naas Hospital spent €25.7million on agency staff, up from €11.3 million in December 2023.

A number of recommendations were made for the hospital to reduce spending, including speeding up the tender process for the local injuries unit, continuing the drive to eliminate or convert agency staff and tightening controls on non-pay spend.

Deputy Farrelly described it as a "priority" for him to write to the HSE to seek an update on their work and findings as part of his role with the Public Accounts Committee
