New figures show that less than half of funeral assistance applications in Kildare result in a payment.
Data shows 234 applications for funeral and burial support were made in Kildare in 2023, but just 102 were approved.
In 2024, applications rose to 275, with 122 payments granted.
As of the third quarter of 2025, 143 applications were submitted, while 61 payments have been approved.
The support is provided through the Supplementary Welfare Allowance scheme and is intended for families who cannot meet funeral costs without enduring financial hardship.
Decisions are made on a case-by-case basis by community welfare officers.
Responding to Kildare South Labour TD Mark Wall, Social Protection Minister Dara Calleary says not all claims qualify and that the figures do not include applications that were disallowed, withdrawn, cancelled or still under assessment.
Families in Kildare who believe they may be eligible are advised to contact their local Community Welfare Service or the National Community Welfare Contact Centre on 0818 607 080.
