Modern methods of construction is an industry term used to describe a range of manufacturing and innovative alternatives to traditional construction.
It’s described as becoming a central part of how Ireland builds, the factory built and off-site approaches that allow homes and buildings to be made faster, to a consistent quality, and in safer, more controlled conditions.
Tomorrow, Extreme Balconies in Clane is bringing the industry together for a national event on MMC.
It is part of a national initiative supporting the sector to adopt these methods.
Dr Alan Hore leads the national initiative, which will be attended by a number of Ireland's main homebuilder companies.
Speaking on Kildare Today, Dr Hore, Project Lead of Skillnet MMC Accelerate explained the benefits of MMC:
"MMC involves moving more construction activity from site to a more controlled manufacturing environment, many components can now be designed digitally and be transported as the early construction takes place."
"We're seeing MMC coming more and more to the fore."
He cited improved quality, productivity, sustainability and safety as benefits of the method, but that the main advantage is speed:
"Above all, it's speed, it's far more efficient than traditional methods."
He also praised the Government, who have taken a "very proactive approach" with a recent MMC roadmap being established with a view to focusing on skill and talent to adopt more modern practices in the future.
