The Pat Smullen Race Day in aid of Cancer Trials Ireland is taking place at Curragh Racecourse tomorrow (29 August).

As well as the eight race card on offer, The Curragh to Curragh Charity Cycle is attempting to break the world record of 270 people wearing a yellow cycling jersey during its finish line gathering during the morning time.
Speaking on Kildare Today, commercial and sponsorship manager at the Curragh Racecourse Evan Arkwright says it's nice to remember Pat Smullen as part of the race day:
"It's nice to remember Pat Smullen, who was a champion jockey and had huge connections to the Curragh, his wife and kids have wanted to run this race to keep his memory going and raise money for a good cause.
"It's unbelievable that over the last four years of the race, which is the eighth race tomorrow, well over €1million has been raised, which goes directly into pancreatic cancer research.
He added that the 19 riders had already raised "well in excess" of €100,000 so far this year ahead of the event.
One such jockey taking part is Nina Carberry, who is coming out of retirement for the race day.
She hasn't raced since 2018, but she felt it was important given the cause involved:
"I'm a little bit nervous to be honest, I haven't raced in eight years, my last race was in Punchestown in 2018, I'm excited but the main reason for doing this was to raise vital funds for Cancer Trials Ireland.
"Pat had done so much work before he sadly passed away, it's all very emotional as well and they've raised an incredible amount of money."
The added caveat of her two daughters seeing her race for the first time will no doubt be a source of motivation for Carberry.
