Just 75% Of Landowners On Board So Far As Uisce Eireann Submits Plans For Major Water Supply Project

The utility is submitting planning applications for a 170-kilometre pipeline from the River Shannon to Dublin, a scheme designed to secure drinking water for half the country’s population.

Just 75% of landowners have agreed so far - but Uisce Éireann is pressing ahead with plans for the largest water supply project in the State’s history.

The utility is submitting planning applications for a 170-kilometre pipeline from the River Shannon to Dublin, a scheme designed to secure drinking water for half the country’s population.

The Water Supply Project for the Eastern and Midlands Region will primarily serve Kildare, Dublin, Meath and Wicklow, with future capacity to supply communities along the route in Tipperary, Offaly and Westmeath.

Uisce Éireann says the greater Dublin area urgently needs the new supply, stressing the project will take just 2 per cent of the long-term average flow at the Parteen Basin.

While three-quarters of landowners have committed to voluntary agreements to allow the pipeline to cross their land, further land is still required, with the utility continuing engagement with remaining landowners.
