KCC Asked To Purchase Historic Derelict Building In Naas Harbour

KCC has been asked to give "serious consideration" to purchasing an historic derelict building in Naas harbour.

There have been calls for the Market House building to be brought into public ownership in order to secure it's future use for the community.

In response, the council said it had engaged with the owner through its property agent, with an offer taking account of the anticipated cost of bringing the building back into "productive use".

Speaking on Kildare Today, Independent Ireland Councillor Bill Clear welcomed the update as "great news":

"They are negotiating with the owner, which is great news because I'd love to see it with a variety of uses.

"It's a very important building that has gone into disrepair, there were a number of planning applications on it rejected by the council, they're not happy with what the developer is doing.

"We need to buy it ourselves and turn it into a community building for the people of Naas."

In 2024, planning was refused for "age-friendly" apartments at the property.

Cllr Clear suggested ideas including a water sports hub, and men and women's sheds facilities, adding that "all the other buildings in the Harbour area have been renovated" and that "I'd love to see it done as soon as possible".
