Kfm and Independent Radio Stations Launch Major Road Safety Promotion

Unique initiative to increase road safety awareness - with over 1,200 episodes of radio content to be broadcast on Irish airwaves

Kfm and Independent radio stations across Ireland have responded to the increase in road deaths and serious injuries with a new initiative to raise road safety awareness.

So far this year, 133 fatalities have taken place on Ireland’s roads, significantly more than the 120 in the same period last year.

More than 100 documentary/discussion programmes as well as 1,100 shorter feature episodes will be broadcast on the 21 stations covering all parts of Ireland in bursts over the next year.

Kfm began broadcasting a 53 part series, devised and scripted by Kfm, on September 1st and it will continue for six months.  It comprises 53 two minute pieces on different aspects of road safety, which are broadcast daily .  In addition, Kfm will broadcast six 30 minute road safety programmes monthly from September.

Michael Kelly, Chief Executive of the Independent Broadcasters of Ireland said:  “This is a unique initiative which means that listeners all over Ireland will hear programming which will increase their awareness and knowledge of road safety and how to stay safer as a road user.

*The initiative is supported by the News Reporting Scheme, which helps fund public interest journalism content through Coimisiún na Meán
