The move comes nearly two decades after the Council declined to purchase the property from the family of its last full-time resident, the late County Surgeon Dr Jack Gibson.
Kildare County Council is set to spend almost €2 million on the purchase of St David’s Castle in Naas, with paperwork now in the process of being finalised.
The landmark property, one of the town’s most recognisable historic sites, will be developed primarily for heritage purposes.
Early discussions have also raised the possibility of developing housing for older people near the castle.
It is understood that councillors are also expected to call for the creation of a public park on part of the site, which includes around three acres of land.
The move comes nearly two decades after the Council declined to purchase the property from the family of its last full-time resident, the late County Surgeon Dr Jack Gibson.
At that time, in 2005, the asking price was reported to be in the region of €750,000.
"The purchase of St. David’s Castle will now form part of the analysis currently underway to develop the Naas Town Renewal Masterplan, which will assist in identifying suitable uses for the Castle & grounds," a council spokesperson said.
They said the final purchase price for the Castle will be confirmed once the conveyancing process is complete.
