Kildare County Council Reveal Funding Streams For Footpath And Street Provisions In The County

Kildare County Council have revealed the main funding streams that are used for footpath and street provisions across the county.

It follows a motion which had asked for clarification in respect of that funding.

The Revenue budget, Local Property Tax, development funds as well as allocations made by Irish Public Bodies are the main funding streams for these improvements.

The Council avails of Urban Regeneration and Development Fund (URDF) and Rural Regeneration and Development Fund (RRDF)
for various public realm projects, which may include an element relating to footpaths.

Elements of NTA funded projects will result in footpath and street improvements, examples include Safe Routes to School schemes and pedestrian crossings.

KCC say the council members can determine the allocation of local property tax and pay parking surpluses. Most municipal districts allow an allocation for footpath and street improvements as a result.

They also say that an allocation is made by Irish Public Bodies (IPB) for the repair and maintenance of footpaths, but this provision is not guaranteed.

Speaking on Kildare Today, Social Democrats Councillor for Celbridge-Leixlip MD Nuala Killeen, said that footpaths are one of the most important issues across Kildare.

"It's one of the most common representations that I get, there's a large number of ageing housing estates and some of he footpath deteriorate over time, you're talking about 30, 40 or 50 and they need to be repaired.

To be fair, the council do improvements works, people will be walking around in their communities and see aspects are repaired and some are waiting to be repaired."
