Kildare County Council is to review accessible toilets in its public buildings as part of plans to make facilities more suitable for people living with a stoma.
Speaking on Kildare Today, Labour councillor Angela Feeney said the council will examine its existing facilities and prepare a programme of potential stoma-friendly upgrades.
Features being considered include additional shelving, hooks, mirrors and appropriate waste disposal facilities, which can make it easier for people with a stoma to use public toilets safely and comfortably.
Councillor Feeney said the busiest public buildings will be prioritised, with Maynooth Library among the facilities highlighted during discussions on the issue.
She said the initiative followed engagement with local campaigners and people with lived experience, and described Kildare as being among the local authorities leading the way on improving access.
The council will now assess what improvements are required before drawing up plans for upgrade.
