A Kildare father-to-be was shocked to learn there are almost 500 children ahead of his unborn baby on a local creche waiting list.
His story was one of many shared at a public meeting in Kilcock this week, where anxious parents spoke about the stress of finding childcare - with some parents from Maynooth forced to search in Longwood in Meath and even as far as Mullingar just to secure a place.
The meeting, organised by Social Democrats TD Aidan Farrelly, heard how families are relying on chance, including word-of-mouth and cancellations, to get a place.
Social Democrats Councillor Peter Melrose said getting a place is as hard as “a lottery win", with some parents forced to give up work as a solution to childcare needs.
