Kildare Fire Service Urges People To Be Cautious As Status Orange High Fire Risk In Place Until Friday

It comes as Kildare Fire Service issued a status orange fire risk for the county, which is in place until Friday (July 24th) 12pm.

There have been a number of fire related incidents in recent weeks as the country continues to deal with dry conditions.

It came into effect on Monday (July 20th).

Speaking on Kildare Today, Assistant Chief Fire Officer for Kildare Fire Services Dermot Scully said that they have had to deal with a number of calls in recent weeks:

"We've attended just over 26 incidents related to forestry and bogs, mainly in border areas. Last night and this morning we've had our Monasterevin brigade out tackling a fire alongside our colleagues in Laois. That's relating to a bog, there is quite a number of those fires occurring."

The weather over the last number of weeks has been very difficult for us, the volumes of calls have gone up in relation to outdoor fires," he continued.

People have been given advice over the period as the high fire risk continues, as well as wildfires being seen in Slievenamon in Tipperary this week.

"We do advise no lighting of any fires whatsoever. Obviously, if there is a fire don't attempt to intervene or fight the fire under any circumstances, move to a safer area such as car parks, we do encourage people to ring 112 or 999, ask for the fire service and give a location because that's critical for us to be respond in a timely manner before it develops or worsens."

He also added that wildfires can occur "very quickly", citing a 2022 fire in London that eventually spread across 40 hectares, destroying houses and buildings in the process.
