In all, 932 applied for monies.

170 primary and post-primary schools, including 5 in Kidlare, are to receive funding to improve their walking and cycling infrastructure.

It's part of the government's Safe Routes to School programme, which aims to make children's travels safer and tackle congestion at school gates.

932 schools have expressed interest in the scheme since March, and will be included over time on a rolling basis.

The Kildare schools to receiving funding are Holy Child National School, Ballycane, Monasterevan Convent National School, Presentation Girls' School Maynooth, St. Brigid's Primary School, Kildare Town and Straffan National School

Junior Transport Minister, Hildegarde Naughton, says 15 million euro has been allocated for the first round of the project:

Minister Naughton, says more urban schools are included in the initial phase of the programme:

Kildare County Council's Road Safety, Cycling and Sustainable Transport Officer Declan Keogh welcomed the announcement. "This is a great boost for these schools, the students and the communities overall.  The 'Safe Routes to School' programme will help reduce congestion outside the schools and create safer routes for walking, cycling or scooting to school which is of great benefit and fits in very well with the councils Active Travel and Sustainable Transport objectives."
