By 2044, the region will need 34% more water than the current supply can provide.
Water supply to Kildare, Wicklow and surrounding areas is too dependent on the River Liffey, which is vulnerable to drought and contamination, the Oireachtas Committee on Housing will hear today.
Uisce Éireann CEO Niall Gleeson will inform the committee that the Liffey, serving 1.7 million people, cannot meet future demands.
The organisation is calling for the Water Supply Project for the region to proceed urgently to ensure Kildare, Wicklow and surrounding areas has a secure water supply.
The hearing is expected to get underway at around 3pm.
