The banks have collaborated to create Zippay - which allows for money to be instantly sent and received between accounts using mobile numbers, rather than IBANs.
The new features will automatically appear in customers' existing banking apps.
Chief Executive of the Banking and Payments Federation, Brian Hayes says the service was developed with customers' needs in mind:
