Speaking on Kildare Today, Social Democrats and Kildare North TD Aidan Farrelly says the ban wont work.
"The research has told us that it won't work, and we've seen polling that tells us parents want a safer space for children and young people online, but we have to do this in a way that will actually achieve that, we put it to social media companies yesterday with regard to the harmful algorithms and what we all see when we scroll on our social media feeds."
It follows social media companies denying that their platforms were addictive.
