A Carlow school prinicipal has given some advice to families as they prepare to return to school this week.

Secondary schools have been on holidays since June, while primary schools have been in recess since July.

Speaking on Kildare Today, principal of Carlow Educate Together National School, Simon Lewis says that people should embrace the emotions when it comes to their kids beginning school:

"It is a big emotional time, not just for the children but for parents, you're child is growing up and going to 'big school', it's important to make the most of it and embrace all of the emotions that come."

Mr Lewis accepted that it will be tough for everyone getting back into the swing of a school routine, but that they will be eased back into it:

"It is going to be really hard going to bed really early and getting up early, but I think the first few days are going to be about routine and getting back into it, and then we'll kick things off next week and get some work done."

He commended the evolving role that schools play in the modern world, with coffee mornings often organised and various outlets for parents to meet each other as their kids settle into school.
