Locals At Risk As Ambulances Close To Kildare Areas Sent As Far As Cork, TD Warns

Independent TD Brian Stanley said ambulances from Portlaoise are being sent as far as Cork, Waterford and Wexford - leaving nearby areas like south Kildare without adequate cover.

A TD has criticised Ireland’s ambulance deployment strategy, warning that it’s leaving parts of Kildare dangerously exposed during medical emergencies.

Independent TD Brian Stanley said ambulances from Portlaoise are being sent as far as Cork, Waterford and Wexford - leaving nearby areas like south Kildare without adequate cover.

He said ambulances are travelling too far and that someone could be having a heart attack and there is nobody to pick them up.

He said ambulances should stay within a 45 to 50 kilometre radius and criticised the National Ambulance Service’s “dynamic deployment” model.

"Whether we like it or not - and I know there are no easy solutions to this and that nothing is perfect - we have to get to a system. The optimum is to keep the ambulances within a 45 km or 50 km area," Stanley said.
