A new report is showing the location of Ireland's 89 data centres which use huge numbers of backup and emergency generators to stay online.

The largest, the EdgeConneX campus in Lucan, has emitted close to 130 thousand tonnes of carbon dioxide since 2017.

Conor O'Carroll from The Journal Investigates says up to 40 more data centres could also be on the way.

Separately, a Government data centre was completed recently in Celbridge at a cost of €70 million euro.

Situated at the Backweston campus, it will replace several smaller data centres.
