A man has been arrested by Gardaí in Athy as part of an ongoing investigation into alleged threats to cause criminal damage to the Abbey Hotel on Monday.
On that day a report was made to Gardaí after a man entered a residential property on Stanhope Street in Athy and engaged in alleged threatening behaviour, claiming he wanted to burn down the hotel.
An investigation commenced and this morning, 12th January, and the man was arrested in the county.
He is currently detained under Section 4 of the Criminal justice Act, 1984 at Kildare Town Garda Station.
It comes after the Mayor Of Athy, Cllr. Brian Dooley has condemned the racist rhetoric circulating in Athy in recent days.
A protest is due to take place outside the Abbey Hotel this evening, where 44 people are being accommodated, including 17 children.
