Maynooth University Chamber Choir Named Overall Winner Of Svátsky Písní Olomouc In Czechia

It was the 52nd edition of the competition

Maynooth University Chamber Choir has made history by being named the overall winner of the 52nd edition of the Svátsky Písní Olomouc (Festival of Songs Olomouc), Czechia's oldest and most esteemed choral competition.

The festival draws choirs from across Europe and includes a range of age categories. Until now, no Irish choir had ever claimed the top honour — the MUNDI CANTANT award for Best Overall Choir.

In a landmark achievement, the Maynooth ensemble became the first Irish choir to win this coveted title, surpassing competitors from Slovakia, Czechia, Macedonia, Poland, and Slovenia.

In addition to the overall award, the choir also triumphed in the Sacred Music and Youth Choir U26 categories.

Their performances included newly commissioned works by renowned composers Michael McGlynn (Tormán) and Eoin Conway (Nead na Lachan).

The jury praised the choir’s artistry with several special accolades: Most Convincing Interpretation of Contemporary Choral Music, Best Performance of a Czech Composition, and Most Inspiring Performance.

"This is a tremendous accomplishment for the choir," said Dr Michael T Dawson, Artistic Director of Maynooth University Chamber Choir. "Czechia and this part of Europe have a rich choral tradition, so to win the Absolute Winner prize, along with five other awards — including best performance of a Czech piece — is truly remarkable."

The competition in Olomouc is part of the choir’s wider tour of the Czech Republic. Their itinerary included a performance at the Irish Embassy in Prague and several events representing Maynooth University. The tour will conclude with a concert at the Church of Our Lady Victorious and The Infant Jesus of Prague, capping off a highly successful year for the choir.

Dr Dawson also extended heartfelt thanks on behalf of the choir to all those who have supported them on their journey.
