The new facility, an extension of the Phoenix Sports and Restaurant Building, received planning approval from Kildare County Council in late 2024.
Maynooth University is set to begin construction on a €19 million Sport Science Centre.
The new facility, an extension of the Phoenix Sports and Restaurant Building, received planning approval from Kildare County Council in late 2024.
The three-storey extension will include a state-of-the-art student gym, a multi-purpose sports hall, changing facilities, and research and teaching laboratories.
Additionally, flexible office space for sports science staff is incorporated into the design, allowing for future expansion.
The facility’s gym will be prominently positioned at the front of the building to encourage student participation in fitness activities.
The entire ground floor will be dedicated to the gym and changing areas, providing a modern, functional space for students.
The new centre will also serve as a hub for sports science education and research, housing both the Sport Science Department and the Sports Office.
This arrangement is expected to foster collaboration between academic and athletic disciplines.
Construction is scheduled to commence in summer 2025, with completion anticipated by January 2027.
