Mayor of Kildare County Council Tim Durkan has stressed the need for housing and amenities in Kildare to be "in tandem" during a meeting with Tánaiste Simon Harris today.
The pair met for "a high level meeting" in Government Buildings today.
Housing, infrastructure and funding were just some of the issues discussed.
The Tánaiste, along with senior Ministers, met with 13 Fine Gael Councillors who have recently been elected as the first citizen of their county.
Councillor Durkan, who was elected as Cathaoirleach in June, outlined his main priorities for his term.
“With more than 7,500 people on the housing list in Kildare, we need to move on housing, schools and creches in tandem. You can’t build houses without civic amenities to go with them.
“I want to make planning permission easier for rural, one-off housing and bring the McAuley Place model of assisted-living to every municipal district in Kildare, which gives people a real option to downsize.
He added that more investment was needed when it comes to cycling and active travel infrastructure, as well as providing more school places.
Simon Harris gave this update after the meeting:
