He has been sentenced to 24 years in prison
Seán McGovern, a senior lieutenant in the Kinahan organised crime group, has been sentenced to 24 years in prison.
It’s in relation to the role he played in the planning of the murder of an innocent victim in the Hutch/Kinahan feud and for the planning of an attempt on another man’s life.
40-year-old Sean McGovern, previously of Kildare Street in Crumlin in Dublin, was extradited back to Ireland from Dubai last year, having been detained on foot of an international arrest warrant.
He pleaded guilty earlier this year directing the activities of a criminal organisation in connection with the murder of Noel Kirwan between October 20th and December 22nd 2016.
He also admitted to directing the activities of a criminal organisation between October 2015 and April 2017 in relation to the surveillance of rival gang member James Gately.
Mr Justice Patrick McGrath went through evidence today in relation to McGovern’s involvement in both crimes.
He said that while Mr McGovern was not the author of the plan to murder both Noel Kirwan and James Gatley, he was a senior frontline operative who within this jurisdiction carried out instructions given by senior members of the crime group.
In sentencing, he took into consideration Mr McGovern's early guilty plea.
Before mitigation the first sentence was set at 16 years in relation to the James Gately plot, before the second sentence was set at 20 years in relation to the Noel Kirwan murder.
This was then reduced to 12 for the first offence and 15 for the second before finally being reduced again to 24 years consecutively - 10 for the first offence and 14 for the second.
