The motion about public water filling stations highlighted a bigger issue in the area in relation to public parks
Donna Phelan, Councillor for the Clane-Maynooth Municipal District had brought a motion to the council about a feasibility study for the installation of public water filling stations at parks in her constituency.
The motion was as follows: That the council carries out a feasibility study to identify suitable locations for the installation of public water filling stations at all playing pitches across the municipal district, similar to those provided by Fingal County Council in Malahide and Portmarnock, in order to support local sports clubs, promote sustainability, reduce single-use plastic waste, and encourage healthier communities.
Speaking on Kildare Today, she spoke about how the motion "highlighted a bigger issue".
"The response I got was telling, the council has no public playing pitches in the municipal district. The council leases out land to clubs, and are no longer responsible for them."
Cllr Phelan added that developments like public water filling stations installations are "not within their remit" as long as the lands aren't owned by them.
"We want to deliver a community space, but the council has to buy land back from owners, and that doesn't make any sense at all."
She also mentioned how the town of Maynooth in particular was affected by the issue:
"Maynooth GAA lease land from the council and invest thousands in maintaining pitches."
"When we talk about providing a something like a basic public water station, we can't do that because land is no longer under public control."
"I don't agree with that approach, because in Maynooth we have no public playing fields."
She said that it highlighted a bigger issue in how the council "manage maintain and invest in public land".
