Mystery still surrounds the unauthorised felling of a century-old tree in The People’s Park, Athy, as Kildare County Council appeals for public assistance in identifying those responsible.

The mature Coastal Redwood (Sequoia sempervirens), which stood approximately 40 feet (13 metres) tall, was illegally cut down in the early hours of Monday, January 27, possibly between 4:00 and 5:00 AM.
Estimated to be over 100 years old and valued at approximately €63,000, the tree was a rare feature in the park, potentially dating back to its opening in the 1860s.
The council is urging members of the public who may have seen anything suspicious in the park on the night of Sunday, January 26, into the early hours of Monday morning to come forward.
