The most common issues were defective tyres, suspension and brakes.
New figures show thousands of vehicles in Kildare are being flagged as unsafe on the roads.
Data from the National Car Testing Service reveals 57,692 vehicles were tested at the Naas NCT centre last year.
Just under 48 per cent passed, while 3,801 vehicles - or 6.6 per cent - were classified as “fail dangerous”, meaning they were deemed unsafe to be driven.
The Road Safety Authority says driving a vehicle with dangerous defects is an offence and is urging motorists in Kildare to maintain their cars year-round, rather than relying on the NCT to identify faults.
Nationally, 133,000 vehicle were classified as “fail dangerous".
The figures come amid an eight per cent rise in road deaths nationally last year.
