Speaking on Kildare Today, Fine Gael Councillor for Newbridge MD Peggy O' Dwyer says that people are often reluctant to report stolen bikes:
"I would say we're under-reporting bikes being stolen, because just say 'I'm not going to get the bike back', I found a bike from a neighbour thrown in over the wall, we put it up on Facebook and no one has actually claimed it."
Cllr O' Dwyer added that people need to exercise caution when it comes to bikes being left in built up areas:
"You just need to be aware and careful, and not to leave a bike unattended even for 10 seconds, because someone will take it."
She also felt that Newbridge was "no different to any other large town" in relation to bike thefts, emphasising the message of Gardaí to use two bike locks when securing them, as well as parking them inside when possible.
