Newbridge-native Dr Joseph Byrne is one of 22 projects that has been funded by Research Ireland Frontiers for ambitious scientific research.
Fianna Fáil Minister for Further and High Education, Research, Innovation and Science and Kildare North TD James Lawless has announced funding of €20 million for the projects.

Dr Byrne is a lecturer in Bioinorganic Chemistry at UCD and Fellow of the interdisciplinary Conway Institute.
His project entitled "GlycoMetalGuard" is about developing antimicrobial coatings and therapies to prevent hospital-acquired infections that come from medical devices.
Dr. Byrne's team aims to target harmful bacteria with novel sugar-based metal compounds.
Dr. Byrne has said "prevention of bacterial infections is key to fighting the challenge of antimicrobial resistance"
