James Lawless has been appointed Junior Minister in the Department of Transport and tackling road deaths is on his agenda.
James Lawless, the newly appointed junior minister at the Department of Transport, aims to tackle the rising number of road deaths, with 97 fatalities reported this year compared to 85 last year, according to an interview by the Irish Independent.
He plans to enhance the National Car Test (NCT), recognising that passing the test doesn’t necessarily indicate a vehicle is in optimal condition.
Lawless emphasises a comprehensive approach involving education, engineering, and enforcement to improve road safety. He is particularly interested in the engineering aspect, including road and vehicle design, and has initiated an independent review of the Road Safety Authority (RSA) and the NCT, with results expected by late summer.
If necessary, he is prepared to introduce new laws to implement the recommended changes.
