Pedestrian Cross to Be Installed At Poplar Square Naas Within Six Months

Cllr Bill Clear brought motions forward at a recent Naas MD meeting.

A pedestrian cross will be installed in the next 3 to 6 months at Poplar Square Naas, according to Cllr Bill Clear of the Social Democrats.

In the recent Naas Municipal District meeting Cllr Bill Clear asked the council to outline the status regarding the pedestrian crossing from Poplar Square to Lawlor’s Hotel that was promised as part of the Public Realm Scheme.

He acknowledges the footpath is too high "slopey and slippy" , and there is no pedestrian cross for people to cross safely.

Cllr Clear also asked the council to investigate the right turn filter on the traffic lights at the junction of Sallins Road and Monread Avenue, Naas on the northbound side.

The right turn light  which activates a few seconds before the main light for southbound traffic turns green as there is only room for one lane of traffic northbound resulting in traffic mounting the footpath endangering pedestrians.

The council have said no to this motion. However, Cllr Clear says this was recommended to him by someone who is an expert in this area.

According to Cllr Clear pedestrians are at risk because cars sometimes mount the path way to get around.

He was adamant that a simple filter light to turn right would ease the traffic, as often the entire road is blocked. He said sensors could be installed which would notify the lights when there are cars waiting.

He said it is very frustrating that the council will not trial it, but will continue to push for it.

Cllr Clear asked the council inform the members if it has access to any premises that is suitable for use by members of Sallins Men’s Shed on a temporary basis, given that they are now without a premises.

He said Sallins have been let down by local authorities for many years. It's a town of 6000 people and he said it was time that the authorities recognised this

He has called on the many local property developers that could come up with a premises for the Men's Shed, to come forward

He said  the council should be pushing developers to put forward a solution.
