Eamon Larkin (69) was found to be in possession of over €400,000 worth of the drug
A pensioner has been jailed for two years after being caught with over 400 thousand euro worth of cocaine.
69 year old Eamon Larkin of Jenkinstown, Co. Meath, just over the border from Kilcock, walked into the dock with the aid of a walking stick.
The court heard the father of four has had two heart attacks and both hips replaced and has mental health issues.
Last June, the car he was driving was stopped in Ashtown and 6 kilos of cocaine worth 420 thousnd euro was found in a shopping bag in the boot.
His own barrister Michael O'Higgins asked ‘how does a 69 year old man with an exemplary life find himself being stopped by Gardaí with cocaine in his car?'.
He said it appears the request came from someone close to home noting the line of drug distribution is kept open by using people whose identities aren’t known.
He asked the court to be as lenient as possible – (noting the accused’s health issues and saying he now lives alone in Portugal where he doesn’t bother anyone.)
But Judge Martin Nolan said Eamon Larkin would have to undergo a term of imprisonment and sentenced him to two years (saying it would have been 4 or 5 if he was healthy.)
